2016 CS Downtown Tour for HMS 4th grade
Describe your experience as the historians of Roanoke. Why is it important that we do activities like this? How did it help YOU? Describe a funny or sweet or otherwise memorable moment to you day. What do you hope the 4th graders learned about history in general and the history of their small town? Reply to this comment today and then respond to a classmate's comment before class Monday.
Being a historian of Roanoke Alabama is really fun I liked knowing that there is more to the buildings in Roanoke. Its important for us to do activities like this so that we learn are history and that we know that were not just part of a small town that it has more background history to it then we think. It helped me know more background information about my town. One of one the 4th graders came up to me after we went in to John Tinneys office and told me that something touched them. Well we decided to go in and look at what touched him and it was a stuffed figure.I hope the 4th graders learned that Roanoke was not small back then that it was big and that it has a lot to it than just the buildings.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about knowing that we aren't just a part of Roanoke today, but that our town has played a bigger role in history than we think. My kids thought John Tinney's office was cool too; they all wanted to ride in the fake cars he had.
DeleteMy kids were scared of John Tinney's office too. That's probably because I told them it had clowns and all in it though.
DeleteI had an awesome time learning about the history of Roanoke and then teaching the kids about what I had learned. It was really cool to learn about the history and all of the things that the town played a part in. I have gone to school at Handley my whole life and drive through downtown everyday, but I had never known all of the history and significance about our town. I remember going on the downtown tour with the Community Studies class when I was little and thinking that the "historians" were so old and so smart, so it was cool to be able to switch roles today and be a leader for the little kids. It is important that we do activities like this so that we can preserve and pass on the history of our town and use this knowledge to improve it. It helped me realize that the tiny town of Roanoke, Alabama is a very important part of history, and teaching the little kids helped me make memories with them. My favorite moment of the day was when we were walking to the old First National Bank (Kesa's office) and we saw a cat on the corner. Half of my kids immediately ran to pet it and the other half hid behind us because they were afraid of it. It was really funny because the cat couldn't have cared less about us, but some of the kids were so scared of getting scratched by it. I hope that the 4th graders learned that learning about history can be fun and educational, and that their hometown is an awesome place to grow up.
ReplyDeleteMy kids did the same with the cat by Kesa's office, and I also remember doing the tour in 6th grade and thinking I hope I'll be able to do this when I'm older and the time sure has flown by.
DeleteLove this lindsay. Especially how you acknowledged the role switches as we talked about. Truly is something to think about as we get older. Seems like yesterday when I was taken on the tour. Now, we are all about to graduate and move our separate ways
DeleteI had a great time talking to the 4th graders today about the downtown. I loved learning about the history of Roanoke and getting to share that with the other kids. It is important we keep doing activities like this because it helps us remember what had to happen for our town to grow into what it is now. This activity helped me realize how little I used to know about Roanoke, and how much I know now. I loved being able to see my little cousin and take pictures with the other kids in my group. I hope the 4th graders learned that History can be very interesting and that Roanoke used to be a lot different than it is today.
ReplyDeleteI am still super happy your cousin gave me a hug. LOL
DeleteI am still super happy your cousin gave me a hug. LOL
DeleteI had a blast touring the fourth graders today. I think it's important that we teach these kids the importance of their town while they're this young because it is basic knowledge that I believe every child in Roanoke should know. For example, like how when we're little, we're taught that George Washington was the first president and Ben Franklin discovered electricity with a key and a kite, these kids should know who Ella Smith is and what good she did for our little town. I had the privilege to be the first to tell them about Ella and that will always mean a great deal to me. This tour taught me to appreciate my teachers more because I feel sorry for my middle school teachers if I was every as wild as those children were today. I loved seeing the boys in my group's reaction to the signed basketball jerseys John Tinney had in his office. They were really bored up until that point and even said that a "cat chasing a squirrel down the street" was just about the only thing they thought would interest them. In the end they were wrong because they had so many questions about stuff in the museum. From wanting to learn about "ancient artifacts" to wanting to know more about slavery, I think they enjoyed the overall tour. I hope these kids take this new knowledge home with them and really understand how amazing it is that our town has gone from being a largely populated- almost tourist attraction- place to one that still truly cares about its people. Because, after all, we are a small town with a big heart.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I didn't think I would ever get the boys in our group out of that room with all the jerseys. I thought Mrs. Treadwell was going to have to drag them out of there.
DeleteI had a terrific time today with the 4th graders. I found being the "historian" was a great way to obtain more information on my part and really play the part as well. The children were so sweet today and they payed pretty good attention considering most younger children don't really do that well. It really blew me away that they asked so many questions and wanted to know more about where they came from and how their town is today. My favorite part of the day was when we went to Awbrey's and everyone ran towards the at because they wanted to pet it, it was so sweet. I hope they learned today that just because Roanoke isn't as big as a place as it use to be,that it still is a place that has a lot of love for the community and will always be a place where "people love people."
ReplyDelete"people love people" - I love this! Our class loved the cat too! Once they saw it they wanted to play with it, we almost couldn't get them to leave.
DeleteBeing a historian of Roanoke is really awesome I like knowing that Roanoke use to be a really busy town and that it was popular. It is very important to do these activities so us and others can learn the history of our small town. A funny moment during the tour is one of the fourth graders asked me if the cats at M.L.Awbrey's were apart of the tour or not.I hope the fourth graders learn that it may seem like just a bunch of building but really its history that you probably never knew about little old Roanoke Alabama.
ReplyDeleteI agree I hope the fourth graders know that Roanoke isn't just a town with old buildings that they actually have reason there here today.
DeleteBeing a historian of Roanoke was so much fun. It was tiring and involved a lot of walking but it was great getting to spend time with the kids. It’s important that we do activities like this to help inform the younger children and the community how important Roanoke really is. It helped me realize that Roanoke was and still is an important town. I’ve always thought Roanoke was just some basic town but really it’s not. I thought it was funny when the kids saw the cats at M.L. Awbrey’s and Kesa’s law office they would forget all about the tour. Most of all I hope the 4th graders learned that even though Roanoke is a small town we still are very important.
ReplyDeleteYou would have thought they had never seen a cat before!
DeleteYeah I know that cat look scared to death when all of them kids flocked around it.
DeleteBeing a historian and taking the fourth graders on a tour of Downtown Roanoke today was so much fun. My group of boys was interested and excited. Activites like this need to be done so that the younger people in town know the history, how much our town has changed, and the legacy they are a part of. Doing this tour taught me TONS about Roanoke that I would have never known such as interesting things that Roanoke is a part of, and how big an impact a small town can have in history. I feel like I can now inform others about it.Probably the most memorable thing that happened to me today was when one kid, I didn't catch his name, got really upset that he couldn't be in my group. I hope these kids got a hold of the impact and history that a small place and town can cause on history overall, and that some of the biggest subjects in history can be somehow traced back to a place like Roanoke.

DeleteI agree that I learned a lot more about Roanoke than I knew before preparing for the tour. Also, his name was Quardell and I don't know why he thought you were so cool.
DeleteToday, was an absolutely great overall day besides going back to class afterwards; However, today was really cool. Lindsay and I were talking about how we remember going on this actual tour, except we were the 4th graders of course. As she stated, it felt really cool to switch roles because as a kid, I was intimidated by the older students. Now, It's all changed. Today, I was the historian to the 4th graders. Besides them making fun of me, being slow, loud, and impatient at times, I actually had a fun time today. It felt really good to have a group listen to what I was saying about the very town we live in and how it was a major boom town at one point. I hope the kids learned today that history is altered by the actions of the people involved in it. History is nothing but courses of actions, taken by whom? Us. I really love the subject of history as a whole and I have taken a teaching career into consideration. Why? because of everything that happened today. I love doing it, it's a passion. It's VERY important in my opinion that we do things like this because, well, lots of the 4th graders asked several questions and had a really fun time today (I hope). It's important to pass down the knowledge. Because after all, the future is boring without a little history. One weird thing though. The kids took the whole "death" thing to pleasure and being lifeless inside of a casket? Not sure about that, but today was definitely something I would love to do again as a senior before I graduate. Ps. Love this class!!!
ReplyDeleteI would enjoy doing this again too.
DeleteI vote we take some older kids next time.
DeleteBonus points for Patrick lololol
DeleteI think they did actually have a little realization that they do have an impact. These kids were actually pretty cool kids, and were actually pretty attentive. They seemed interested, and yeah, this class is pretty bomb.
DeleteI really enjoyed being a historian and teaching the 4th graders about Roanoke's history. It's important that we do activities like this to pass down our town history to the younger generation. It helped me learn me learn more about the town I live in. The most memorable moment of today for me was when a girl took off running when she saw a dead armadillo in the road. I hope that the 4th graders learned that there is more to Roanoke than we think we know today.
ReplyDeleteToday's tour was very interesting, exciting, and educating! It is important that we do activities like this because people should know the great accomplishments that happened in their hometown and why things are the way they is today. A very sweet moment was when we was breaking into groups and most of the girls wanted to me in my group. I hope the fourth graders learned today that there is a reason why things is the way they is today & that history can be very fun and interesting at the same time! Also Roanoke use to be a booming town.
ReplyDeleteToday was a great day with the 4th graders! Being a historian for my little small town and teaching the future historians of Roanoke made my heart so happy! The children's eagerness to learn and their happy vibes really made this day special. It is important do activities like this because one day they will have to be the ones to pass along our town's history. This taught me about patience and how to get on little kid's level. It also taught me that this small community is full of love and we are always (4th graders, high schoolers, teachers, and everybody else) sticking together. Along the way, a bunch of the kids would be like, "Hey, thats the old hair salon!" or "This place use to sell suff." It's almost like they were trying to teach us, lol. Another thing they LOVED doing was looking through the windows to see what was happening inside. I hope the 4th graders learned that their hometown is full of history and it took a lot hard work for it to be what it is today. I also hope they realize that there is history all around them and we learn new things everyday!

DeleteTouring the students also taught me to be patient! I also agree with everything else you said because I'm not from Roanoke but I learn something new about this town everyday!
DeleteToday I had an amazing time exploring Roanoke with the fourth graders! Being a "historian" of downtown was fun for me to see the kids faces when I told them an interesting fact that they did not know about our small town. I believe it is very important that we have this day with the kids because I remember the year I went on the tour I learned a lot and I still to this day remembered some of the things our guides told us. If we don't pass the history of Roanoke down to our younger generation, who will be around to uphold this information? It is something about interacting with older students like us that these kids really enjoy and just not reading about it in a book or just hearing about it in class, to be there and actually see where is was imprints a memory in their head for a lifetime. This whole expeirence as a whole really informed me on what actually went on in Roanoke, like the fact Clark Gable came to our City Cafe. The funny moment to me today was when my whole little group of kids kept calling me "Miss. Lizard". I really hope the 4th grade got out of this that there is more to our small little town of 6,000 people, than meets the eye, I hope they went home with a smile on their face today to their parents to tell them the big high schoolers showed them old places in Roanoke.
ReplyDeleteBeing an historian in Roanoke was very interesting and exciting. It is important to do activities such as this because it teach kids today about the history of their town and what happened in the previous life. It helped me because, it taught me how hard it is to be a teacher. But in conclusion I hope that the 4th graders learned that even though it’s a small town, Roanoke has it’s “perks”.
ReplyDeleteBeing a historian in Roanoke was super exciting and different to me. I think doing activities like this are important because it helps us to learn to have patience and it helps them to learn some things that they didn't know about before. This proved to me how challenging and nerve wrecking it is for teachers and that teaching is definitely something I don't want to do. I do hope that all the fourth graders had fun and learned something new and just overall enjoyed the whole tour.
ReplyDeleteIt is nerve wrecking to teach and to keep them in order. I don't want to teach either.
DeleteBeing a historian was exciting and very interesting. Teaching other kids about Roanoke was a great experience. It's great we do activities like this to help other people learn about the past of Roanoke, which is a great and very interesting topic. It helped me because I also learned about Roanoke in this process, and Roanoke has some very interesting places that I didn't know about. The funny part for me was running after my kids and I had to keep picking one of my kids up because he kept climbing up things. I hope the fourth graders learned a lot, but to know that their small town has so many interesting places.
ReplyDeleteI think i had the other climber! Every time i would turn around he was on top of something.
DeleteIt was really exciting but I'm glad I didn't have a climber. Mine just wandered off all the time and wanted to sit down.
DeleteI really enjoyed the kids! had so much fun learning about Roanoke history since ive just moved here and everything. BY far the best class ive ever taken and the downtown tour was just so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the kids! had so much fun learning about Roanoke history since ive just moved here and everything. BY far the best class ive ever taken and the downtown tour was just so much fun.
ReplyDeleteIt is important that we do activities like this with younger students and teachers so we can learn about our own history and teach everybody else about it. Without the Community studies class, we would never know about our history or would never be able to teach it. The most memorable moment I had was with Mykierston and one of his group students that couldn't keep his hands off everything we told him not to touch and Mykierston would try to talk to him calmly but he was getting mad. I had so much fun and wouldn't mind doing that tour again.
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun tour and I had an interesting time trying to educate the fourth graders on the town I have grown up in and they will grow up in. I learened many things about the places I have always seen and wondered about. I have never seen so many kids that did not listen to what they were suppose to do and just wanted to sit down and drink water. I feel like they learned that the town is bigger than they thought and that little Roanoke is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved being a Roanoke historian. I think it is very important for us to do activities like these to help with our people's skills and leadership. At some pionts it was very difficul to get the 4th graders to listen and stay still but if you interact with them and make it fun they would be much more willing to listen. One very sweet moment for me was when 1 of my 4 boys in my group grabbed my book and said he would like to hold it for me since i was doing alot of work already teaching them about Roanoke. I had 4 of the sweetest boys ever. They were always standing right beside me and listening to everything i had to say. One of the boys named Ashton said i can't believe there this many cool things to learn about in Roanoke. I hope they learned a lot but mostly how historic and beautiful Roanoke really is.
ReplyDeleteI had a awesome time learn and getting to teach the kids about the history of Roanoke. Even though the 6 kids I had was very wild,I had 3 boys and 3 girls. They was all so very active and wanting to wander around but I think they got to learn a lot about Roanoke and its history.
ReplyDeleteI think you all learned how hard it was to be a teacher...especially to kids who get distracted easily. I know you now know the best way to learn something is to teach it...because you have to be on your game to teach...kids...even 4th graders...can spot a fake...I think it is so cool that you got to be the tourists years ago in 6th grade and now you are the tour leaders. I always have parents tell me their kids stop them in town and tell them about things they have learned...that is how history (and knowledge) is spread...people pass it along. There aren't that many people to pass along Roanoke/Randolph County history though...so it is up to us...our small, merry band of Community Studies students. There is still more to learn and more to teach before our 12 weeks is up so get ready....
